2nd GRADE-Language Arts (SWR201, GW201, Lit201)

Writing: Students will begin cursive as they continue to master neatness and letter formation using Handwriting Without Tears (HWOT) cursive. HWOT uses various multi-sensory activities, songs, and activities to teach good writing habits creating an essential foundation for upcoming years. They will continue with Writing with Ease (WWE) working on narration and dictation using literature excerpts.

Spelling and Grammar: The world of words opens up to students as they master, blend and manipulate phonemes gaining competency and fluency with spelling and reading. First Language Lessons is a gentle way to master parts of speech and using complete sentences. They will memorize grammar definitions as well as poems such as: The Goops, The Year, The Little Bird, The Months, and All Things Bright and Beautiful.

Literature: Living books are incorporated into every aspect of learning, but the joy of reading is also emphasized with read -aloud, discussing basic story elements and organization. Titles include:The Magician’s Nephew, Owls in the Family, The Wind in the Willows, and The Random House Book for Fairy Tales.

Reading: Students will learn reading through phonics and a love of literature. Guided reading will encourage students to read books both at their own level and to grow beyond.

2nd GRADE-Math

Second graders continue to develop a deep understanding of foundational math concepts instead of just learning formulas. They will gain use mental math strategies, model drawing, number bonding, and place value to solve problems using the four basic operations as well as begin fractions, measurement, and geometry concepts.

2nd GRADE-History

Students will continue studying history chronologically with the second year of the history cycle, The Middle Ages. Through story, activities (such as building castles and medieval feasts), geography, and literature they will explore cultures during the middle ages.

2nd GRADE-Science

Second grade students continue their study of biology with the study of botany and of the human body through observation, classification, and experimentation. They will study beautiful living books, watch God’s creation in action through internet clips, use hands-on demonstration, and see first-hand how life is designed and organized.

2nd GRADE-Song School Latin II (Part 1)

Song School Latin Book 2 completes the engaging introduction to Latin started in Book 1 and matches the developmental level and fun-loving nature of younger students. 2nd graders will commence their first of two years with this material. Weekly lessons include songs, chants, new and review vocabulary, an introduction to grammar and derivatives, and many engaging illustrations, stories, games, and activities.

Music II (MU201)*

History: Hymns I – Although Hymns will be included as part of the performance component of the previous sections, Hymns I focuses more extensively on the historical and pedagogical aspects of Christian Hymnody. Students will also receive broad exposure to the music and composers of the Classical and Romantic periods. Performance/Theory: Singing and playing percussion instruments with more complex melodic and rhythmic content, combining singing and playing, either in groups or as individuals, to strengthen their understanding and control of tempo, beat vs. rhythm, and the independence of melody from accompaniment. In addition to continued singing with solfeggio syllables (do, re, mi, etc.), they will begin to read music written on the treble clef staff by singing melodies using pitch/letter names. They will also begin to build a musical vocabulary and apply the terms appropriately.

Visual Art II (A201)

In Visual art, students will develop an appreciation and understanding of art as they are introduced to great artists throughout history, each year beginning with a basic timeline to gain an appreciation of art history. Student will develop an appreciation of beauty, creativity, color, line, texture, composition as they are exposed to different art mediums and techniques. They will have fun and be inspired as they enjoy art in its various forms. Second grade students will deepen their understanding of the seven basic elements of art as they explore cultures around the world, emphasizing art from the Greek and Roman time periods. As they study great artists from different cultures, they will learn from masters of the trade, experiencing different techniques and mediums while also developing an appreciation for art. They will also begin drawing exercises, emphasizing the elements of shape.

Joyful Discovery II (JD201)

Joyful Discovery is a hands on, interactive course using a variety of units to nourish a child’s natural curiosity and to encourage a love for learning. Students will:

  • Make observations in nature and discuss how they display God’s goodness and beauty.
  • Learn how other cultures around the world live.
  • Learn about food choices and food preparation.
  • Develop skills in sewing, woodworking and movement in dance.
  • Learn about safety and the human body

Literature/Drama II (L/D201)

Students will deepen their understanding of fiction as they learn about characterization, basic plot, cause and effect, setting, and theme. Using poetry, speeches and autobiographical missionary accounts, students will learn how to express themselves using various genres of literature. Students will develop an appreciation for theater as they study play production, costuming and props through drama. Students will have the opportunity to explore as they take the pages of a story to the stage.

Physical Education II (P201)

Students in second grade will continue to build basic fitness skills while also gain an understanding of common games and sports. They will develop a joy of play as they learn to work in teams and use good sportsmanship.
