Sixth GRADE-History
Continuing in the history cycle, students will see God’s hand in the scope and flow of history as they complete their chronological study of history with the modern age. Students will explore cultures around the world through story, activities, literature, and current events. As they study history from the 1900’s to current events, they will also review world geography.
SIXTH GRADE-Language Arts (SWR501, GW601, LIT501)
Writing: Students continue The Writing & Rhetoric series with Refutation & Confirmation and Commonplace. They will use whole-story examples of literature, careful listening, and the progressive steps of progymnasta to grow their writing skills through imagination and imitation. In this level, students will learn to think more deeply about story both refuting and defending, forming arguments and expressing their thoughts well. They will develop the art of persuasive writing using arguments against the common vices of people (such as cowardice and boasting) and arguments in favor of common virtues (courage and humility).
Grammar and Spelling: Sixth grade students continue to develop confidence in recognizing and using parts of speech, sentence and paragraph structure, editing techniques, as well as diagramming sentences. Students continue to gain proficiency in spelling and application of spelling rules as they integrate all of language arts, moving into high school level spelling skills.
Literature: Living books are incorporated into every aspect of learning, but the joy of reading is also emphasized with read -aloud, discussing writing techniques such as the development of setting, plot, and characters. Titles include: The Book of Dragons, Little Women, Carry on Mr. Bowditch, Animal Farm, and Wrinkle in Time.
SIXTH GRADE– Math
Math concepts deepen as students continue mastering the foundations of math. Students continue to master the four orders of operations with whole number, fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratios, averages, rate, and speed. They work with order of operations, distributive properties, geometrical shapes, radius, perimeter, and area of circles, and begin to solve algebraic problems. They use mental math strategies and model drawing to solve more difficult world problems, connecting math to every day life.
SIXTH GRADE Science: Life Science I
Students will use a classical, Charlotte Mason approach to explore life science at a deeper level than during the earlier grammar years. Students will use living books, experimentation, memory work, sketching, scientist biographies, and in-depth reports to explore science and learn the scientific method as they study plants and animals.

Latin
Latin for Children A (LC101)
LFC A incorporates elements that will engage students of every learning style. As a step beyond just an exposure to the language, when used as a whole, this series trains students in grammar, vocabulary, and English derivatives in a lively, interactive way that is perfectly suited to students in the grammar stage.

Latin for Children B (LC201)
LFC B continues to train students in grammar, vocabulary, and English derivatives in an engaging, interactive way. Chants, games, derivatives, and reading history excerpts in Latin not only help students of every learning style master the material, but also teach valuable study tools for all subjects.

Latin for Children C (LC301)
Students are becoming veterans as they enter their 3rd year of Latin. LFC C reviews words and concepts already learned increasing their level of mastery and also introduces the remaining noun declensions and verb conjugations, new adjectives and adverbs, and three new verb tenses. Students will also be joining the voyage and adventures of a brave sea captain and his sailors whose story will be told in Latin from chapter to chapter.

Music VI (MU601)
History: Students will survey non-classical American musical genres (Folk, Blues, Jazz, etc.). Performance/Theory: As students continue to sing a variety of melodies they will engage in deeper levels of musical analysis. Fundamentals of Harmony III – Students will study the basic components of diatonic harmonic analysis: scale and chord structure. They will continue to sing with solfeggio syllables and begin using solfeggio syllables as a music-reading tool. Solo and ensemble performances will be given using voice, recorder, and other instruments students have learned through private study.

Visual Art V (A501)
In Visual art, students will develop an appreciation and understanding of art as they are introduced to great artists throughout history, each year beginning with a basic timeline to gain an appreciation of art history. They will integrate what they are learning in history with art as they learn from great artists during the early modern times 1850s-1950s.. Students will develop an appreciation of beauty, creativity, color, line, texture, composition as they are exposed to different art mediums and techniques. They will deepen their appreciation for art, continue to explore the techniques and mediums of the masters, while also creating original pieces.

Joyful Discovery V (JD501)
Joyful Discovery is a hands on, interactive course using a variety of units to nourish a child’s natural curiosity and to encourage a love for learning. Students will continue exploring cultures and handiworks from previous years. However, students in Joyful Discovery V will also focus on STEM concepts (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).

Literature/Drama VI (L/D601)
Students will deepen their understanding of fiction as they learn about characterization, basic plot, cause and effect, setting, and theme. Using poetry, speeches and autobiographical missionary accounts, students will learn how to express themselves using various genres of literature. Students will develop an appreciation for theater as they study play production, costuming and props through drama. Students will have the opportunity to explore the stage as they recreate a theatrical production taken from a classic story.

Students will advance in their fitness skills and develop further understanding of rules and techniques of games and sports. They will develop a joy of play as they learn to work in teams and use good sportsmanship..

Upper Grammar-Leadership 6 (LEA6)
Students will continue learning systematic theology from Big Truths for Young Hearts discuss the Christian worldview as well as how to apply what they are learning through discussing servant leadership, humility, courage, and how to be a godly man or woman. They will be further challenged in personal disciplines such as goal setting, time management, study skills, and interpersonal relationships.
